Straighten curly hair
Global Education Director
While we are huge fans of embracing your natural curls, we at Keune also understand that sometimes you want to straighten your curls. There are several ways to straighten your curls. You can straighten your curls yourself with a straightener, but you can also have curls permanently straightened at the hairdresser's. Our hair experts tell you all the possibilities.
Straighten curly hair yourself with a straightenerThe following steps will help you straighten your own curly hair with a straightener.
Make sure your hair is clean and there are no old styling products in your hair. So wash your hair first with a good shampoo and conditioner.
Spread Style Straight Cream strand by strand on your hair even before you blow-dry your hair.
Then put a heat protector in your hair and blow-dry it well. Tip: While blow-drying, brush your hair straight down to make it straighter already. Make sure you brush with suppleness and care so you don't break your hair.
Divide your hair into sections and straighten small sections each time to get the best results.
Straightening curly hair without a straightener is not the most efficient way and it is actually not possible to straighten your hair that way. You have to add a heat factor to the process to straighten your hair. What you can do is blow-dry your hair with a brush where you run the brush straight down through your hair. Only chances are that you will still end up with a bang in your hair.
How long does it take to straighten curly hair? This very much depends on your curl type and hair length. Usually, straightening medium-length hair takes 1 to 2 hours. Straightening long and/or thick hair can take 3 or more hours. The thicker and longer the hair, the longer it takes to straighten curly hair.
Tips to keep curly hair straightDo not walk through the rain or in a or in a humid environment. This will cause your curl to come right back. Always make sure you protect your straightened hair from moisture. Does your hair frizz after straightening? Then you probably need a better straightener or your hair requires better hair care.
It is also possible to straighten curly hair for a longer period of time. You just need to visit a hairdresser to do this. Keep in mind that these are tough treatments for your curls. To get your curls back, you will have to let the perm grow out first. We explain some methods your hairdresser can use to straighten curly hair.
Brazilian Blow-Dry for curly hairA Brazilian Blow-Dry is a treatment suitable for people with very frizzy hair. With a Brazilian Blow-Dry, a layer of keratin is placed around your hair, making it smoother, softer and shinier. Keratin is a protein that is also naturally present in your hair. The treatment is pricey and takes a few hours, but then you will have beautiful shiny hair for 2-3 months. The advantage of a Brazilian Blow-Dry is that it is cumulative treatment. This means that each new treatment contributes to the result of the previous treatment.
Curls permanent straighteningPermanently straightening your hair works the same way as permanent curls. Your hair undergoes a chemical treatment after which it remains straight for 6 to 9 weeks. After about 6 weeks outgrowth occurs. This is because your natural curls come back at the roots. So you will have to have this touched up if you want to keep permanently straight hair. Do you want your original curls back? Then you have to let the perm grow out completely. Because permanent straightening is a chemical treatment, it is not recommended if your hair is porous.
Curly hair relaxingThis is an eminently popular treatment for straightening curls in people with frizzy hair. This treatment is more chemical than permanent straightening so it even manages to straighten the coarse curl of frizzy hair. The result is visible for about 6 weeks after which the outgrowth also needs to be touched up. Be careful: because this is such a chemical treatment, your hair can become very brittle and fragile.
