Longer and healthy hair is a common desire, and it's understandable. Hair professionals are often asked: “How fast does hair grow?” and “How can I make my hair grow faster?”. If you want to speed up your hair growth, there are several ways to stimulate it.

How fast does hair grow?

The speed of hair growth varies from person to person. On average, 'healthy hair' grows about 1 to 1.5 centimetres per month. This means you can expect an average of 15 to 18 centimetres per year, provided your hair is healthy.

Although that may not seem like much, it's important to realise that healthy hair growth is not just about length. Healthy hair also means your hair is strong and shiny. Frequent combing and other tools often cause the ends to break, making it seem like your hair isn't growing. Good hair care is essential to prevent hair breakage and maximise growth. Consider the Revive Balm, this technology works on multiple layers of the hair, making it easier for the hair to grow longer.

The Hair Growth Cycle

Hair grows from a hair follicle. This follicle has three parts. The bulb is where the hair develops, the sebaceous gland produces oil for hydration, and the shaft is the visible part of the hair.

The hair growth cycle has four phases:

  1. Anagen Phase (Growth Phase): New hair actively grows from the hair follicle. This phase can last 2 to 7 years. It determines the length of the hair.

  2. Catagen Phase (Transition Phase): Hair growth slows down, and the hair follicle shrinks.

  3. Telogen Phase (Resting Phase): The hair shaft is at rest while a new hair grows underneath.

  4. Exogen Phase (Shedding Phase): The hair follicle releases the hair, causing it to fall out. The hair follicle returns to the anagen phase.

Unfortunately, there is no miracle cure to speed up hair growth. However, you can stimulate growth by building a good hair routine. Regular visits to the hairdresser are also crucial for maintaining healthy hair.

Women with medium to long hair are advised to visit the hairdresser three to four times a year. Women with curly hair are recommended to get a haircut every three months. Split ends in curly hair can quickly lead to tangles and hinder growth.

For men with short hair, it's good to visit the hairdresser every six weeks if they want to maintain the same hairstyle, regardless of hair quality. However, this can vary depending on hair type. Unsure how often you need a haircut? Ask your hairdresser for advice.

Getting your hair cut while you want longer hair? It may sound contradictory, but it's a smart move. By regularly trimming the ends, you prevent split ends. And that ultimately benefits hair growth.

How do you activate new hair growth?

Another important factor for healthy hair growth is good scalp care. A healthy scalp ensures that the hair follicles receive the nutrients they need.

Improving blood circulation on your scalp can stimulate hair growth. An effective way to do this is by massaging your scalp with a scalp brush. A scalp brush promotes blood circulation, removes dead skin cells, reduces stress, and ensures that hair products are better absorbed.
